Time: 1:00-2:00pm
Location: Zoom - register here!
Details: Have you ever wondered how farmers become farmers? As fewer young people are going into farming as a profession, it's time to tale a look at the pipeline for an aspiring farmer who wants to begin in this vital profession. At the Equitable Land Access Working Group Meeting on Thursday, February 27, 1:00-2:00pm, you will become familiar with the types of programs and opportunities available to beginning farmers, from agricultural education in our k-12 schools, to agricultural apprenticeships, to incubator farms, to a young farmer creating her own path as she goes. We will also have a conversation about how to improve and expand on opportunities for beginning farmers. At the meeting, we will learn from:
Kate Medina, Founding Executive Director, Charles Koiner Conservancy for Urban Farming Kate will discuss their efforts to bolster agricultural education in Montgomery County Public Schools, including developing a novel curriculum to make use of their new school farm at Loiederman Middle School.
Mike Scheffel, Director, Montgomery County Office of Agricultural Services Mike will discuss beginning farmer issues and land access in Montgomery County, with emphasis on a shared vision for an incubator farm site for beginning farmer training in Montgomery County.
Emma Jagoz, Owner/Farmer, Moon Valley Farm Emma will tell the story of her own path into farming, and how she now hosts farm apprentices on her farm, with the help of Pasa Sustainable Agriculture's farm apprenticeship program.
